What is Trauma informed Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy works on the premise that talking alone, or just working on altering our thoughts or belief patterns will not help release stuck trauma from the body. Addressing our thoughts and beliefs is extremely important, but often we cannot enact change from here as trauma is at the root of the belief itself. Trauma is anything that overwhelms the nervous system that gets frozen in time from when the trauma itself occurred. The energy in the body is prevented from being expressed at that moment which results in tension in the body, changes in physical posture, increased systemic inflammation, limiting beliefs and even health conditions and pain. The mind-body connection allows processing, integration and release of stuck trauma by means of movement and understanding our inner world of emotions and sensations.

Utilising specific processing techniques in a trauma informed way, such as Bi-lateral processing (EMDR), Internal family systems (also known as Parts therapy) or pure somatic release in conjunction with talking can help us heal and move forward with clarity from better understanding our experiences and our inner world.

How my sessions differ from traditional therapy

  • I help create a safe, respectful, compassionate environment for you to learn about your nervous system, the 3 elements of wellbeing and how to regulate to remain as emotionally safe as possible during the healing process. I am very much committed to building a relationship with you where you can be your authentic self to support your own natural ability to transform and heal using a variety of modalities that suit you best.

  • What works for one person may not be suitable for another and we work at your own pace. Coming to therapy is a courageous act and I will stay by your side as you take this healing journey.

  • Sessions will help you learn to embrace the idea of impermanence, that feeling calm is possible, emotions can be held and felt safely and that your nervous system can shift - that change is possible.

  • For neurodiverse clients, I believe that my lived experience of neurodiversity gives me a deep understanding of the additional trauma and extra challenges in daily life and as such I can tailor your therapy to support your neurotype.

  • I also like to help you understand your experiences from a less literal place and uncover deeper unconscious narratives that connect your personal experience to more universal, humanistic and spiritual themes.

  • Where appropriate I can also utilise my experience in family coaching to bring practical tools and strategies to empower you and your family through difficult experiences, help with connection and understanding each other to aid repair and facilitate lasting change in your dynamics.

  • As a singer, I have an interest in using vocal techniques to stimulate the vagus nerve, release trauma and create authenticity. Sound is a powerful tool for healing as it bypasses the need for logical thinking or speech.

  • Using my personal experience with yoga I can also create and tailor specific movements that align with your interests.

  • I have further CPD training in the support and preparation for and integration of psychedelic experience in a therapeutic setting.
